1. Driving Under the Influence

According to WFTS Tampa Bay, just shy of 800 people were killed in DUI-related accidents in Florida in 2021. DUI or driving under the influence accidents are common in the state resulting in thousands of crashes each year. As reported by the news channel, impaired driving causes roughly 15,349 crashes from January 1 – December 22, 2021.

Driving under the influence or driving while impaired is a serious crime that can result in jail time. Individuals who drive impaired and cause an accident with injuries can also be held civilly liable. If you are injured by a drunk or drugged driver, it is recommended that you speak with a motor vehicle accident lawyer as soon as possible.

2. Reckless Driving

In addition to impaired drivers, Florida roadways are filled with reckless motorists that cause numerous collisions every year.

Reckless driving may include but is not limited to:

  • Speeding
  • Failing to yield
  • Tailgating
  • Not observing traffic lawsRacing
  • Improper passing

Accidents caused by reckless driving are 100% preventable. It is imperative to slow down and drive cautiously whether you are on a local street or one of the many highways that cut through the state.

3. Driver Inattention

According to the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV), there were 333 fatalities related to distracted driving in 2021. This marked the highest number on record in the state in the last 8 years. The regulator also noted that distracted driving caused over 56,000 accidents during the same year.

One of the main culprits in distracted driving is cell phones. Motorists are encouraged to put away their cell phones and other devices while they are behind the wheel. It is also against the law to text while driving.

4. Inclement Weather

While Florida can be sunny and warm throughout the year, it can also be home to some of the most turbulent weather in the South. Inclement weather including heavy winds and rains can lead to devastation on the roads.

5. Poorly Designed Roadways

Lastly, roadways that are inherently unsafe can be found throughout the state. These roads may have been improperly designed, making them more prone to deadly crashes. Heavily traveled streets can also have loose, uneven payment or debris that can cause dangerous collisions.
