New Details Emerge in Fatal Boat Accident

As we previously wrote, a father and son were killed when their boat collided with another vessel off the coast of Key Biscayne. The fatal boating accident also injured ten people, including two young children.

Local 10 is now reporting the identities of the deceased as they have been released by authorities,  80-year-old Pablo Castro Diaz and his 42-year-old son Osvado Castro. The two men were aboard the same boat when it collided with another vessel. The impact caused several people to be thrown overboard.

Both the United States Coast Guard and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue arrived on the scene to help with the rescue. The investigation into what caused the collision is ongoing.

Staying Safe While Boating

If you are involved in a boat accident, there are several things you need to do to protect yourself and others. First and foremost, you need to contact the local authorities. If anyone appears to be injured, notify the dispatcher so that they can send for emergency medical personnel. Seeking immediate treatment may prove critical to your recovery. If someone has been thrown overboard as a result of the collision, help them get to safety.

Once you are able, you need to consider contacting an experienced attorney. An attorney can help you understand your rights and pursue legal action against any negligent parties. Depending on the situation, you might be entitled to compensation for your injuries.

Common Causes of Boating Accidents

Many boat accidents are preventable, caused by inattention or inexperience. Before you go out on the water, it is highly recommended that you take a boating safety course, and in some cases, it may be required. A boating safety course can teach you who has the right of way and other important rules of the water.

Common causes of boating accidents in Miami:

  • Lack of training or experience
  • Boating under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • Speeding
  • Failure to adhere to posted signs
  • Operator inattention
  • Inadequate maintenance
  • Faulty equipment

A boat crash can happen in a matter of minutes. By taking simple steps to stay safe while boating, you can avoid dangerous situations.
