Fatal Rowing Accident on Lake Fairview
Five members of the North Orlando Rowing Club were involved in a fatal boating accident on September 15, 2022. According to NBC News, the vessel carrying the rowers capsized for unknown reasons. Reports indicate that lightning strikes happened in the area around the time of the accident.
Three rowers were treated for minor injuries and released. One middle school-aged rower was hospitalized, eventually succumbing to his injuries earlier this week. A second child was pulled from the water 24 hours after the accident occurred.

It is believed that a lightning strike may have caused the vessel to capsize. Several reports indicate that lightning was in the area at the time of the accident. Weather.gov notes that it is exceedingly dangerous to be swimming or boating during a lightning storm. When lightning strikes water, it discharges most of its electrical energy near the water’s surface.
What to do if there is lightning in the forecast:
- If you are on or near water, get out. Stay away from the water’s edge and get off the beach.
- The National Safe Boating Council states that boaters who are on the water during a lightning storm should stay inside their cabin and “avoid touching metal or electrical devices.”
- Boaters should avoid going on the water if at all possible.
- If weather conditions change, head back to shore.
- A lightning strike can cause a fire on the boat. Make sure your vessel is equipped with the proper safety equipment.
